TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan announced four new mpox cases on Tuesday (July 23), bringing the total to 13 for July.
The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said via a press release that the number of cases in July is the highest in ten months. The four new cases are males between 30 and 40 who contracted the disease in either north or central Taiwan.
CDC Deputy Director Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said that with many large-scale events over the summer, mpox cases may increase again. Lo recommended those who are in high risk categories to get vaccinated against the disease as soon as possible.
He said that two vaccine doses can provide up to 90% protection. Information about where to get the mpox vaccine can be found on the CDC’s website.
According to the World Health Organization, people who have multiple or new sexual partners are currently most at risk. According to its fact sheet, because initial outbreaks of mpox occurred amongst gay and bisexual men, these groups may be more at risk.
