TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) traveled to Hualien Tuesday (July 23) to inspect the Han Kuang 40 war games.
The latest edition of the annual exercises is scheduled for July 22-26, though Typhoon Gaemi is expected to influence parts of the drills. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) said it was canceling some events, while other adjustments were possible.
Lai donned a military camouflage uniform Tuesday morning to fly to the Hualien Air Base, where he watched the simulation of the response to an enemy bombing, Radio Taiwan International reported. The Air Force set up treatment stations according to Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC).
The goal of the exercise was to train to protect, save, and treat soldiers who would be able to continue the fight, a military spokesperson said.
The president also visited the Jiashan Air Base to witness soldiers training to repair runways, per CNA. Lai did not make any speeches or comments while attending the drills, but did hand out bonuses to the troops.
