TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A land warning for parts of Taiwan could be issued later on Tuesday (July 23) as Typhoon Gaemi approaches, bringing intermittent rainfall to northern and eastern Taiwan on Tuesday morning, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the storm was centered about 490 km southeast of Eluanbi, moving north-northwest at 20 km/h. The CWB warned ships to be on alert in the Bashi Channel and northeastern and southwestern waters around Taiwan, including Lanyu and Green Island, per CNA.
CWB forecaster Liu Yu-chi (劉宇其) said northern, northeastern, and eastern Taiwan could expect intermittent rain Tuesday as the typhoon's outer bands approach. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in central, southern, and southeastern areas.
Starting Tuesday night, the storm's outer circulation is expected to bring heavier rain and stronger winds to western and mountainous areas of Taiwan. Its strongest impact is forecast for Wednesday (July 24), with torrential rain possible in western and northeastern mountains, and torrential downpours possible in the central and southern mountains.
Gaemi could strengthen to near the upper limit of a medium typhoon, the CWA said. With the most likely landfall in northeastern Taiwan, the CWA did not rule out the possibility of a more southern landfall in Hualien or near the northern coast.
