TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Gaemi may make landfall on Taiwan’s east coast late Wednesday (July 24), according to the latest Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasts.
The CWA said Gaemi had intensified from a tropical storm into a typhoon at around 2 p.m. on Monday (July 22), and its path toward Taiwan had been revised southwestward, per CNA. Forecasts now predict it will make landfall on the east coast either late Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
CWA meteorologist Kuan Shin-ping (官欣平) said that if the typhoon follows the predicted path, Taiwan’s north and Yilan County will be most affected by strong winds and rain over Wednesday and Thursday.
Kuan said Taipei's Tamsui River may flood if heavy rain combines with the annual spring tide. He also said there is still a chance the storm’s path will change, and the CWA is constantly monitoring the situation.
Earlier on Monday, CWA Forecaster Liu Yu-chi (劉宇其) said the administration will also continue to assess whether the storm meets the standard for suspending work and school.
Regardless if Gaemi makes landfall or not, its impact on Taiwan will be considerable, Liu said. After passing Taiwan, the storm is likely to bring heavy rain and wind to the outlying Matsu Islands from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday.
