TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A tropical depression off the east coast of the Philippines was upgraded to Tropical Storm Gaemi, potentially impacting Taiwan between Tuesday and Wednesday (July 23–24), according to WeatherRisk meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮).
Wu said Tropical Storm Gaemi is strengthening and traveling northwesterly, with a 220 km radius. As the tropical storm enters Taiwan’s northern waters, Wu warns of strong winds and rain, per LTN.
Wu said Gaemi's path is being continuously adjusted, leading to uncertainty when it comes to the issue of sea and land warnings along with rainfall predictions. Gaemi is the third tropical storm in the Pacific this year and is currently traveling at 6 km/h, per CWA.
According to the latest weather modeling, Wu said Gaemi will approach early Tuesday morning (July 23), with localized showers potentially turning into thunderstorms in various areas, leading to heavy rainfall and a slight drop in temperature. As Gaemi passes, its periphery will bring rain and cooler temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday (July 24–25).
By Friday and Saturday (July 26–27), Gaemi will have mostly passed, causing temperatures to rise, and leading to unstable weather with the possibility of heavy rain.
Meanwhile, Wu said another tropical depression is developing slowly and heading toward China's Hainan Island. It is expected to have no impact on Taiwan.
