TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s first indigenous submarine, the “Narwhal,” attracted onlookers as it docked at a pier in Kaohsiung harbor Saturday (July 20).
The vessel is currently undergoing harbor acceptance tests (HAT), with sea acceptance tests (SAT) to follow. Visitors at the port saw the submarine at a floating dock near Pier No. 91 on Saturday, per CNA.
Even though the pier forms part of a restricted area and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been banned from the vicinity, staff and visitors at nearby warehouses and offices could still see the submarine from other parts of the harbor.
Workers were seen on top of the Narwhal, while a boom crane was positioned nearby on a floating pier. The report suggested the crane might be used to move torpedoes.
The Narwhal, built by CSBC Corporation, Taiwan, is scheduled to be commissioned into the Navy in November 2025 if all tests ware successfully completed. Taiwan has plans to build an additional seven submarines using the same design as the Narwhal.
