TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Crop farmers in Taiwan’s southeast have been advised to batten down the hatches ahead of a possible Typhoon next week.
Weather forecasts indicate a low-pressure system in the South China Sea may develop into a typhoon that could affect Taitung from Monday (July 22), the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station said in a press release. The research station advised farmers to take preventive measures to avoid crops being damaged in the heavy rain and high winds that have been forecast.
Advice included increasing the water depth in rice paddies so that crops are submerged and out of the rain, and moving seedlings under cover. The research station also noted that custard apples, avocados, pineapples, and citrus fruits are being harvested, and outlined a range of measures farmers can take to avoid losses.
Meteorologists are still uncertain about the path any potential Typhoon will take, per SET News. On Thursday, one meteorologist put the chance of a Typhoon forming at 70%, while other forecasts have predicted it will affect Taiwan any day between Tuesday and Thursday if it does form.
