TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan wants to change residency rules to attract more digital nomads and high-end foreign professionals, the government said Thursday (July 18).
One of the measures under consideration includes allowing professionals making NT$6 million (US$183,000) a year to obtain an Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC) after just one year in Taiwan, National Development Council Minister Paul Liu (劉鏡清) told reporters. He said the proposal was inspired by a similar measure in Japan.
The minister also unveiled a target of 60,000 foreign professionals, 50,000 foreign students, and 10,000 digital nomads by 2028, per CNA. The proposals to be submitted to the Legislative Yuan for review would also include a special visa for remote work by foreigners, he said.
The thresholds for professional visas and long-term residency permits in Japan and Singapore are similar to those in the NDC package. Japan awarded permanent residency to foreign professionals earning the equivalent of between NT$4 million and NT$8 million per year, while Singapore set the equivalent of NT$700,000 per month, according to Liu.
