TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Australia’s CO2CRC Limited to help Taiwan reach its 2050 zero carbon emission target, reports said Wednesday (July 17).
The company is specialized in carbon capture, utilization, and storage research, with Australia playing a leading role in developing related technology, per CNA. The MOU was signed in Melbourne on Monday (July 15).
Taiwan listed the capture and storage of carbon as one of its 12 key strategies for reaching the 2050 target. During its visit to Australia, the NCKU delegation also toured the Otway International Test Center, a carbon research facility owned and managed by CO2CRC.
Taiwan already possessed a wide range of experience in oil exploration, making it possible to quickly assimilate the latest technologies for carbon capture, NCKU experts said. The aim was to adapt Australia’s expertise to local conditions in Taiwan without having to make any detours, they said.
Taiwan Power Company and CPC Corporation Taiwan had started building carbon capture and storage facilities. They were likely to need international advice on how to proceed successfully, the report said.
