TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) said Tuesday (July 16) that online gender-based violence had affected 60% of Taiwanese.
People between the ages of 30 and 39 and young gay males were most likely to have been victims, per CNA. The first survey about the problem reviewed the experiences of people between the ages of 18 and 74.
Harassment was the most common form of online gender-based violence, followed by humiliation and online attacks, and cyber stalking. During the past year, 47.4% of survey respondents were subjected to online violence, while 59.4% had suffered from similar practices since the age of 15.
Victims often failed to seek help, with 26.3% of heterosexual males turning to others for help after being attacked. For gay males, the figure stood at 42%, the MOHW survey found.
The poll received 5,030 valid responses via social media including Facebook, Instagram, Line, Dcard, and PTT between Oct. 14 and Nov. 11 last year.
