TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君) met with Japanese lawmakers in Taipei on Tuesday (July 16) to discuss furthering cooperation.
Joined by Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang (田中光), Cheng met with Japan House of Representatives Member for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Suzuki Keisuke and other representatives, per CNA. Suzuki is the head of the LDP’s Taiwan Policy Research Group, and said that Taiwan and Japan face common issues.
These include declining birth rates, ensuring energy and food security, reducing reliance on China, and attracting foreign talent, Suzuki said. Meanwhile, Cheng said that Taiwan is grateful for Japan’s “long-term attention to peace” in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
Cheng said Taiwan’s Cabinet will continue to promote cooperation on science and technology, and trade with Japan. She said this will be achieved through “diplomacy and cross-ministerial cooperation.”
Cheng added that Taiwan is looking forward to continued cooperation with Japan in the production of semiconductors, and noted Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s activities in Japan.
