TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) wants to improve pedestrian safety by making city roads narrower and introducing a general speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour.
According to Transportation Minister Li Men-yen (李孟諺), South Korea has introduced a speed limit of 50 km/h in city centers and 30 km/h near schools or crowded areas, per CNA. The changes helped in South Korea, but Taiwan’s pedestrian mortality rate was still the same as South Korea’s in 2010, he said.
Visibility at 2,700 intersections in the country should be improved, so drivers do not encounter blind spots preventing them from seeing pedestrians crossing the road, Li said. He added he was mulling the possibility of changing the color of crosswalks, by replacing the white stripes with green stripes framed in yellow, for example.
Traffic lights could also be adjusted to allow pedestrians to start crossing the street before cars begin turning at the intersection. Li said the measure has proven to increase pedestrian safety.
The MOTC said it will hold a weekly news conference to publicize the latest statistics about traffic conditions and accidents per city and county.
