TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police are still looking for a fugitive in the killing of Tainan Fisherman’s Association Chair Lin Shih-chieh (林士傑) after the arrest of a suspect in Kaohsiung, reports said Saturday (July 13).
Investigators arrested a man surnamed Chang (張), 27, in the Renwu District Friday (July 12) based on evidence collected from a mask found inside a car abandoned by the suspected gunman. However, police said Saturday that all they could confirm was that Chang had been in the car, but it was not clear whether he was Lin’s murderer.
Chang maintained his innocence, while police were investigating trash left behind at a motel for indications pointing to the other fugitive, the Liberty Times reported.
Lin, 53, was shot dead by a masked gunman as he was leaving his home in Tainan in the early morning of July 8 to go hiking. He was the father of a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member of the Tainan City Council.
The gunman fled in a car, which he set on fire at a public parking lot. He then drove a second car to Kaohsiung, where he used acid to try and destroy evidence before escaping by scooter.
Police said Saturday they were still trying to establish how many people had been involved in the killing and what the motive was.
