TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tours to Kinmen County’s Dadan Island, described as a “frontline among frontlines,” will reopen on a trial basis at the end of July, the county’s government said on Saturday (July 13).
The Kinmen County Government said two private operators have been approved to run tours to the island between July 27 and Oct. 31, per CNA. Tours to the Coast Guard-controlled island opened in 2018, but were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dadan Island lies about 4.4 km off the Chinese city of Xiamen. Tours to the site will be incorporated into the “Blue Highway” route, which takes tourists through various attractions around the islands that make up Kinmen County.
Kinmen County Magistrate Chen Fu-hai (陳福海) said that tour guides have been trained to explain the unique features of the small island's history, ecology, and culture. Chen said private operators have been invited to conduct the tours to improve the tourist experience.
Records of human activity on Dadan Island extend back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Formerly a strategic stronghold, the island features a fort emblazoned with the slogan “China's Reunification under the Three Principles of the People (三民主義統一中國),” a reference to the ideology of the Republic of China’s founder Sun Yat-sen (孫中山).
