TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police on Friday (July 12) determined the identity of the man suspected of fatally shooting Lin Shih-chieh (林士傑) on Monday and are preparing to arrest him.
Lin, the 53-year-old chair of the Tainan Fisherman Association, was killed in front of his home. Police said they had identified the suspect as a man with a violent criminal record and planned to arrest him, per CNA.
Police said they will announce the preliminary investigation results in two days. They said the shooter is currently still in the country.
Jhang Wun-yuan (張文源), commander of the Tainan City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Corps, said police discovered the suspect's vehicles were near the scene on June 22 and 23 before the shooting, reported UDN. Jhang said the suspect had planned the crime and had appeared at the relevant locations before.
The police have identified one specific suspect and will first focus on his vehicles; however, they believe more than one person may have been involved.
The police will wait until Lin's family has completed the funeral arrangements before investigating if there were any threats against him before his death.
At around 5 a.m. on Monday, Lin left his residence on Xinle Road in Tainan's South District to go hiking and was shot outside his home. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.
Surveillance footage showed the shooter waiting for Lin nearby. When Lin appeared, the shooter approached and fired multiple shots at him, then ran away, driving a car down an alley to flee the scene.
The shooter drove to a public parking lot on Lane 53, Xinjian Road in Kaohsiung's South District, changed clothes and shoes, left the two guns in the car, and set the car on fire to destroy evidence. He then switched to another car and drove to Kaohsiung's Dashu District, where he abandoned the vehicle.
The shooter poured acid on the steering wheel, seats, and door handles, then escaped on a scooter heading toward Pingtung.
