TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A high school-educated man who provided medical services without formal training for over 30 years was sentenced to prison by a Changhua court on Monday (July 8).
A 69-year-old man surnamed Hsu (許) was sentenced to one year and six months in prison in addition to four years probation and a fine, per CNA. He was charged in February, and a subsequent investigation found that he ran a medical practice in Lukang Township intermittently over three decades.
The court found that Hsu, posing as a doctor, wrote prescriptions, gave injections, and instructed patients during this time. It found that he earned NT$2.52 million (US$77,531) from the enterprise during its operation, which was confiscated by the court.
The court said that Hsu had no previous convictions and presented a low risk of recidivism. In addition to the prison sentence, Hsu was also ordered to pay a NT$300,000 fine.
Hsu reportedly confessed to the crime and took to working as a rice farmer after he was exposed.
