TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taichung Environmental Protection Bureau has recently integrated AI into its river dust prevention network.
The bureau in a press release on Saturday (July 6) said during autumn and winter, Da’an River and Dajia River basins enter a low-water period, exposing their riverbeds. To mitigate harmful river dust, the bureau used AI-based prevention methods, per CNA.
The bureau said they have integrated UAVs with AI recognition capabilities to identify sand areas and establish a monitoring network. When onsite sensors detect PM10 concentrations exceeding 150 micrograms per cubic meter, protective measures are activated, it said.
“This proactive approach allows for early warning to residents and reduces the harm caused by river dust,” the bureau explained.
Additionally, the bureau also collaborated with the Taichung Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency and the Taichung Port Branch of Taiwan International Ports Corporation to conduct river dust prevention operations. The agencies worked together to set up water lines, dustproof nets, and plant trees.
The bureau reported they have improved 63.82 hectares of exposed land and swept 9,621.2 km of roads.
