TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An industrial accident in Taiwan’s Yunlin County on Saturday (July 6) resulted in two deaths and three injuries.
A stretch of scaffolding, 40-meters high and 80-meters long, on a building under construction in Douliu City collapsed at 4:12 p.m., injuring multiple workers. Two workers died of cardiac arrest, and three female workers suffered head injuries in the accident, reported CTS News.
According to reports, the area was hit with heavy rains and strong winds prior to the collapse. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found 15 people trapped in the rubble.
A 40-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, who were suffering from cardiac arrest, were rushed to the Yunlin Branch of National Taiwan Normal Hospital, but were pronounced dead after arrival. Among the other victims, three women, aged 40, 43, and 46, suffered head injuries and were sent for treatment to the local branch of the Affiliated Hospital of National Cheng Kung University, College of Medicine.
The building under construction, located on Douliu’s Henan Street, is a factory that belongs to the Formosa Advanced Technologies Company. The Yunlin County government has suspended all work on the site until an investigation into the accident is completed.
