TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) said Wednesday (July 3) that cosmetics brought into Taiwan must comply with customs regulations and can only be for personal use, effective July 1.
The TFDA eliminated the classification system of specific-purpose and general-purpose items for cosmetics. Specific-purpose cosmetics, such as sunscreens and hair dyes, had been subject to quantity restrictions, per CNA.
While there's no limit on sunscreens, hair dyes, antiperspirants, and other cosmetics, those purchased abroad for personal use cannot be sold, displayed publicly, used for consumer testing, or transferred to others. The Taiwan Cosmetic Hygiene and Safety Act prescribes fines of NT$10,000 (about US$300) to NT$1 million for violations.
Eight types of medical devices can now be imported through a simplified customs clearance process. These items can be carried in both carry-on and checked luggage but are limited to one import every six months.
They are for personal use only and cannot be sold online. The list includes bandages, liquid bandages, medical cotton swabs, condoms, tampons, daily disposable contact lenses, corrective lenses, and medical masks.
