TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Residents of Orchid Island worked with tourists to remove 267 kilograms of waste from Dongqing Bay and learn about Yami culture on Thursday (July 4).
The coastal cleanup was a collaborative effort between the Taitung County Environmental Protection Bureau (TCEPB) and Hai Gut Studio. About 80 people participated, per a press release.
In addition to the cleanup, local guides offered participants a tour of a Yami semi-basement house. According to the release, this type of dwelling exemplifies the Yami people's harmonious relationship with nature.
The house can withstand strong winds and typhoon rains without flooding, and the interior maintains a cool temperature even when it’s hot outside.
The TCEPB said it hoped tourists would gain a deeper appreciation for Yami culture while also taking better care of Orchid Island's environment. The bureau highlighted the case of one tourist who visited the island for its natural beauty but participated in the cleanup and enjoyed learning about the Yami.
The TCEPB reported removing 138 kg of recyclable waste and 129 kg of non-recyclable waste. It expressed gratitude to all who participated in the effort.
