TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A New Taipei police officer has been charged with aiding in the blackmail of individuals secretly filmed in motel rooms.
CNA reported on Wednesday (July 3) that a detective from a Sanchong police station surnamed Lin (林) was charged on suspicion of leading a criminal group accused of extorting millions of dollars from those they secretly filmed while engaging in extramarital affairs.
The criminal group led by Lin allegedly targeted individuals driving expensive imported cars who they believed were engaging in extramarital affairs. Prosecutors say Lin used his position to identify the alleged victims, who were then asked to pay a ransom for the secretly filmed videos.
Lin has been suspended from his duties. Police said many alleged victims have been identified. In addition to Lin, eight others have been arrested in connection to the case.
