TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A baseball team from Taoyuan Kuei-Shan Little League defeated a Philippine opponent by a score of 13-1 on Tuesday (July 2), advancing to the finals in the Asia-Pacific region.
Chiu Wei-che (邱唯喆) was the starting pitcher for the semifinal round. He encountered some trouble in the first inning, giving up a walk and a hit, which resulted in one run.
Chiu soon steadied in the second inning and cruised through the Philippine lineup surrendering just a few walks through the fourth inning. He was bolstered by consistent run support from the Taiwan team, which added on in each inning, and increased the run differential throughout the game, per UDN.
In the end, Chiu earned the win as the starting pitcher, going a total of five innings with eight strikeouts and one earned run.
Taiwan will now face South Korea in the championship match on Wednesday (July 3), with a victory qualifying the team for a ticket to the annual Little League World Series held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
But first Taiwan will have to get past a formidable South Korea team that defeated Taiwan in a previous Pool A game by a score of 13-3 on Sunday (June 30). Another challenge will be overcoming home-field advantage as the Asia-Pacific regional competition is being held at the Dream Park in Hwaseong, South Korea.
