TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan Tourism Bureau launched the Taiwan Pass Railways Edition on Monday (July 1), offering a comprehensive travel pass for NT$2,800 (US$86).
The new pass combines three types of transportation. It includes unlimited rides on Taiwan Railways for five days with a choice of one pass for four Taiwan metros and four Taiwan Tourist Shuttle lines, per Taiwan Pass.
In response to the Hualien earthquake, the limited-time Hualien Revitalization Plan offers a complimentary pass when buying a Taiwan Pass Railways Edition pass. This offer ends Sept. 30, per Klook.
The pass is available for purchase by both domestic and international travelers. Initial use requires seat reservations for stations along the Yilan Toucheng-Taitung Dawu section of the TRA Eastern Trunk Line.
The four choices for MRT lines include the unlimited 2-day pass for Taipei Metro (FunPASS Taipei), the round-trip ticket for the Taoyuan MRT, the 48-hour tourist pass for the Taichung MRT, and the 2-day pass for the Kaohsiung MRT and LRT.
Purchasers can choose a round-trip ticket for the Qingjing, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, or Kenting Express lines for the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle. The Five-Day Pass must be redeemed at one of the 18 designated TRA stations: Taitung, Hualien, Luodong, Yilan, Nangang, Songshan, Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Zhongli, Hsinchu, Taichung, Xinwuri, Chiayi, Tainan, Xinzuoying, Kaohsiung, and Fangliao.
Passes can be purchased through designated channels, namely Klook and Lion Travel websites, and can then be activated after entering a redemption code in the Taiwan PASS App. The pass must be activated and used by Nov. 30.
The 5-day pass for Taiwan Railways is valid for travel on the following TRA train types: Tze-Chiang Ltd. Express, the Puyuma Express, Taroko Express, Tze-Chiang Ltd. Express (3000), Chu-Kuang Express, and local and fast local trains, per CNA.
Seat reservations are required for all trains except for the Tzu-Chiang Express, Chu-Kuang Express, and local or fast local trains. Passengers must secure reserved seats before boarding.
