TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese conceptual artist Shi Jin-hua (石晉華) died in a scooter accident on Kaohsiung’s Sanduo 2nd Road at 1 p.m. on Saturday (June 28).
A 20-year-old man surnamed Chen (陳) who suffered light injuries is suspected of hitting Shi from behind on a scooter. Police said neither party had been drinking alcohol, per UDN.
Mind Set Art Center, who had represented Shi for the past 15 years, posted a Facebook message on Sunday (June 30) announcing his death. Over the years, Shi had achieved acclaim, primarily as a conceptual artist, with works incorporating the physical act of creation, regularly appearing at Art Basel Hong Kong, the Taipei Biennale, the Asian Art Biennial, and numerous solo exhibitions.
Born in Magong, Penghu, Shi suffered from juvenile diabetes at a young age. This experience led him to treat his body like an instrument or tool, with many works being repetitive, meditative movements such as walking a pencil across a large piece of paper, per CNA.
Shi's work appeared simple in the use of materials, colors, and concepts, but was arduous to execute. Shi leaves behind a body of work that stretches 40 years as he has carved out an important role in Taiwan’s contemporary art world.
The Mind Set Art Center announced that a public memorial is tentatively scheduled for July 7. More information will be posted on the art center’s website.
