TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese drag queen Nymphia Wind promoted Taiwan's democratic values, including LGBTQ+ rights progress, at New York City Pride 2024 on Sunday (June 30).
Nymphia won "RuPaul's Drag Race" season 16, earning the title "Next Drag Superstar." The Taiwan Tourism Bureau invited her to serve as the rainbow ambassador for the Taiwanese contingent, according to CNA.
Before the march, Nymphia said she was honored to perform for former Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) at a press conference. She called Tsai an incredible representation of Taiwan's diversity and openness.
Nymphia said that it's uncommon for a head of state to attend a drag performance. This, she argued, serves as a testament to Taiwan's progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights and its position as a forerunner in the Asian LGBTQ+ rights movement.
Nymphia also shared her thoughts on representing Taiwan. She said that competing as an individual requires self-reliance.
Representing a nation means carrying the weight of a whole country. This sense of belonging to a larger community provides a support system not present during solo endeavors.
The Tourism Bureau also set up a Taiwan rainbow booth at the event. The booth aims to educate participants about Taiwan's LGBTQ+ history and achievements, its role as a leader in Asian LGBTQ+ equality, and its unique tourism offerings.
The New York City Pride March, the largest in the U.S., had the theme "Reflect. Empower. Unite," this year. It promoted LGBTQ+ equality and respect and featured groups supporting Palestine, Israel, and Ukraine.
