TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) was presented with pictures from his conscription period in 1980 during a visit to the military training center of Chenggongling in central Taiwan on Friday (June 28).
After a speech at the site in Taichung City, he was handed the grade report from his stay there more than four decades ago. He received 100 marks out of 100 for shooting practice, while he finished the training with an overall score of 89.63, the Liberty Times reported.
At the time, college students were required to visit Chenggongling during their summer holidays for at least a month. Lai took courses in politics, basic training, warfare, shooting, and athletics.
The training center also presented him with pictures taken at Chenggongling as well as photo taken during his military service on the outlying island of Kinmen.

Lai’s Friday visit was to observe the training routine of new conscripts. Compulsory military service in Taiwan was extended from four months to one year, beginning last January.
The president compared the present situation at the training center favorably with the time he spent there, per CNA. During his training, conscripts did not have their own bed and there was no air conditioning, Lai said.
