TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei ranks as the 66th most livable city in 2024, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) annual Global Liveability Index 2024.
Among the 173 ranked cities, the top 10 were: Vienna, Copenhagen, Zurich, Melbourne, Calgary, Geneva, Sydney, Vancouver, Osaka, and Auckland. In Taiwan, Kaohsiung ranked 72nd and Taichung at 74th, per CNA.
Vienna retained its position as the world's most liveable city for the third consecutive year, and Osaka was the only Asian city to make it into the top 10.
“Western Europe has retained its position as the most liveable region in the world, with Copenhagen, Zurich, and Geneva once again making it to the top ten,” the EIU explained. “The 30 western European cities in this year’s ranking reported an impressive average score of 92 out of 100.”
However, the EIU added that Melbourne, Sydney, and Vancouver, despite being in the top 10, experienced a decline in their infrastructure scores due to severe housing crises. Similarly, Toronto fell out of the top 10 to 12th place for the same reason.
A city's rank on the Global Liveability Index is based on scores in five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
