TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) visited Sweden on Tuesday (June 25) to learn about bioenergy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
Led by NSTC Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Development Director General Luo Meng-fan (羅夢凡), the delegation aimed to understand Sweden's renewable technologies and facilitate cooperation, per CNA.
At the welcome reception on Tuesday, Taiwan representative to Sweden Klement Gu (谷瑞生) said the transition to net zero is not just an environmental issue but also critical to Taiwan’s international industrial competitiveness. Given the global trend toward net zero emissions and the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the Taiwanese government announced its net zero emissions policy on March 30, 2022, the representative added.
“Therefore, Taiwan and Sweden should intensify their cooperation in the field of net zero carbon emissions,” Gu said.
Meanwhile, Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) CEO Lars Hultman will visit Taiwan in July to renew the science and technology cooperation memorandum with the NSTC, reported CNA. The agreement seeks to promote research between the two countries in communications, life sciences, and environmental engineering.
The total bilateral funding is estimated to reach NT$250 million (US$7.7 million), matching the amount from the first phase of the memorandum.
