TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — International design publisher Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers recently released Grace Cheung’s (張淑征) “The Architecture of Xrange: Inspired by Constraints,” showcasing 20 years of national architecture.
According to an Xrange Instagram post, the book contains four chapters that cover the “diversity of creation” and “freedom to shape abstraction” through photography and meticulous documentation. The work details projects like “Ant Farm House,” in Taipei, which was converted from a stone house.
In an interview with CNA, Cheung said, “The experimental spirit and courage to dream in Taiwanese society, along with the clients' determination to leave a more permanent and meaningful legacy for the next generation, allow us to unleash our creativity."
Cheung said the book's title, “Inspired by Constraints,” aptly describes the atmosphere behind the realization of these projects and reflects the challenges of practicing architecture in Taiwan.
“When creating architecture, I often feel like we are on the front lines of a battlefield, constantly contending with various challenges and responding flexibly to countless complex and variable local conditions to realize our ideas,” the architect said.
“Grace Cheung’s work has brought a sculptural sensibility, disciplined imagination, and spatial complexity to the landscape of Taiwanese architecture - qualities that are rarely seen in Taiwan,” architecture critic Aaron Betsky wrote in the book’s introduction.
