TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung City Government approved the environmental impact assessment for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) third planned Kaohsiung fab on Tuesday (June 25).
The city government held a review on Tuesday to assess the environmental impact of the new semiconductor plant on the site of the former CPC Corporation Kaohsiung Refinery, per CNA. Currently, TSMC's three fabs in Kaohsiung are under construction or planning.
The development area includes production and administrative zones, covering approximately 17 hectares, with an estimated peak power consumption of 210,000 kW and an annual power consumption of approximately 1.8 billion kWh.
Kaohsiung Water Resources Bureau Director Tsai Chang-chan (蔡長展) pledged the construction timelines for the Ciaotou and Gangshan recycled water plants will align with TSMC’s plant construction needs, ensuring a 100% supply of recycled water on schedule, reported UDN.
The plants will gradually increase supply in line with Nanzih Industrial Park’s construction schedule, providing 35,000 tons of water in 2026, 55,000 tons in 2028, 70,000 tons in 2029, and 110,000 tons in 2030. This far exceeds the demand of TSMC’s three plants, Tsai added.
TSMC Vice President of Operations and Facility Arthur Chuang (莊子壽) said the timelines for renewable energy and carbon reduction would be shortened to five-year plans, which will be discussed further within the company.
