TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Around 500 protesters marched through central Taipei on Sunday (June 23) to express solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
Under a heavy downpour, protesters began at Liberty Square and marched through Zhongzheng District to gather outside the Control Yuan. The march was organized by a group of more than 60 civil society groups, who in a joint statement called for attention to what is happening in Gaza.
The march called on “Taiwan’s society and government to think about the Israeli government’s systematic violation of the Palestinian people,” according to the statement. Protesters also made several demands of Taiwan’s government, including to legislators and ministries.
The protesters called on Taiwan’s economic ministry to publicly release trade records with Israel, and said Taiwanese products should not be used by Israel in its campaign in Gaza. They also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide no further aid to Israel, and to continue providing aid to Palestinians affected by the war.
The march was attended by White Terror-era political prisoner Wu Chun-hung (吳俊宏) and Hong Kong musician Kuo Ta-nien (郭達年). Other groups in attendance included the Taiwan Obasang Political Equality Party, the Indigenous Youth Front, and labor groups.
Since Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel in October, about 35,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian authorities’ estimates published by Reuters in May.
