TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Railway has installed solar panels covering 9,641 square meters around Taitung Railway Station, generating peak power of approximately 1.71 MW.
The solar panels generate electricity for the equivalent of 410 households for one year and offset the station's annual carbon (CO2) emissions by about 930,992 kilograms each year, the equivalent of 2.5 Daan Forest Parks. The station's solar panels cover rooftops, walkways, parking and waiting areas for taxis and other vehicles, per CNA.
A solar panel canopy extends into the parking lot to provide commuters with year-round protection from sun and rain. The installation of solar panels was in response to the central government’s green energy policy that promotes energy conservation and carbon reduction.
Taiwan Railway said the project cost, including renovations to the station, was NT$400 million (US$12.3 million), with solar panels installed on 12 buildings associated with the station, per a Ministry of Economic Affairs Energy Administration press release.
The installation of a solar power canopy in the parking lot was paired with energy-saving lighting devices to provide more direct and efficient lighting. This will not only enhance the safety of passengers traveling to and from the station but may also increase the usage of parking spaces.
A taxi waiting area is also covered by solar panels, protecting taxi drivers from the elements and affording more comfort during the heat of summer.
