TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – 7-Eleven convenience stores will dim their signboard lights for three hours every day in order to conserve energy, reports said Friday (June 21).
During the first phase, 1,500 branches of the 24-hour chain will turn off their outside lights from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., per CNA. The move will reduce carbon emissions by almost 475,000 kilograms and save 960MWh per year, according to President Chain Store Corporation.
The company called on consumers to take effective steps to conserve energy, especially at the start of summer. State utility Taiwan Power Company estimated that electricity consumption from June to September is 20% higher than during the rest of the year.
President Chain Store said the new initiative followed on from Earth Hour on every March 22, which the company has taken part in for the past three years. During this year’s edition, more than 10,000 locations operated by 440 brands dimmed their lights for one hour.
