TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s export orders rose by 7% in May compared to the same month last year, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Thursday (June 20).
The total for May reached US$48.89 billion (NT$1.58 trillion) due to rising demand for products related to high-performance computing (HPC), AI, and cloud computing. Downstream customers were also making up for their decreasing inventories, per CNA.
Expressed in NT dollar terms, the export orders reached a level 12.6% higher than in May 2023, the MOEA said. Taiwan’s export orders for the period from January to May stood at US$229.3 billion, 2.2% higher than during the same period in 2023.
Orders for information and communication technology (ICT) products reached US$14.06 billion in May, a record for the month and an increase of 11.4% over the same month last year. Price hikes for large TV screens and the rise in demand for optical lenses resulted in US$1.77 billion of orders for the optical equipment sector, 7% more than in May 2023.
