TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) established three new government committees on Wednesday (June 19) to address the nation's growing challenges.
In a speech marking one month in office, Lai announced the creation of the National Climate Change Response Committee, National Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee, and Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee, per the Presidential Office.
“The goal of these committees is to develop national strategies, engage in dialogue with civil society, deepen cooperation with the international community, and take action for Taiwan’s future,” he said.
The National Climate Change Response Committee is in charge of climate governance from a national perspective and promoting transnational cooperation, Lai said. He envisioned a net-zero and sustainable green lifestyle for Taiwan.
“Taiwan must not only continue to promote energy transition, but also put into practice the twin green and digital transition, as well as a just transition,” he said.
The National Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee focuses on improving emergency and natural disaster preparedness. Lai recognized the need to “expand the training and utilization of civilian forces” and bolster energy and critical infrastructure security. Taiwan aims to “build a stronger and more robust democratic society” that upholds national security and regional peace, he added.
The Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee seeks to address the challenges of the post-pandemic era, which include antibiotic-resistant superbugs and transnational diseases of unknown origin, Lai said. Cancer, the leading cause of death among Taiwanese, is another concern, he added.
The president said he was “determined and confident” about leading Taiwan into the future. “If we do not start taking action today, we will fall behind tomorrow. So, the time for action is now,” he said.
