TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A critically endangered leopard cat was found dead near the side of the road in Miaoli County with a veterinarian confirming the 10th leopard cat roadkill incident in the county this year.
Chang Wei (張葦), head of the Nature Conservation Section of the Miaoli County Agriculture Department, said he was notified at 7 a.m. on Tuesday (June 18) that a leopard cat was found dead on Chanye Road. The adult female weighed 2,532 grams and is thought to have been run over.
Chang said the incident took place near Yuanli Creek, a freshwater source within the habitat frequented by leopard cats. Within a 3 km radius, four leopard cat traffic deaths have been reported, per CNA.
According to Chang, the authorities will investigate the incident and invite local groups to discuss leopard cat conservation. Talks could include strategies to make wildlife crossings safer for leopard cats.
