TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) is set to announce the creation of three new government committees on Wednesday (June 19).
Each committee includes industry, government, and academia representatives, according to a Democratic Progressive Party official. The committees will meet quarterly, with the president updating the public on relevant updates, CNA reported.
The three committees will focus on climate change, health, and resilience. By forming these committees, Lai aims to enhance Taiwan's resilience and adaptability in the face of global challenges and promote peace, stability, and prosperity.
The establishment of these committees is primarily in response to three major developments. For the first time, the G7 leaders' summit voiced support for Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations in its joint communique. Additionally, G7 members have emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for four consecutive years.
Taiwan's relations with Europe have also been improving, and it closely monitors changes within the European Parliament. Changes in the European Parliament impact global affairs, the official said.
Additionally, the 2024 COMPUTEX in Taipei hosted major global AI leaders, highlighting Taiwan as a central player in technological advancement. Given these factors, Lai sees a need to adapt to the latest global developments, the official said.
