TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled east Taiwan at 11:46 a.m. on Tuesday (June 18), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County and a 3 in Yilan County and Nantou County. An intensity level of 2 was recorded in Taichung, Hsinchu County, and Yunlin County.
An intensity level of 1 was measured in Taoyuan, New Taipei, Changhua County, Taitung County, Chiayi County, Miaoli County, Chiayi, and Tainan.
The CWA said its epicenter was 22.2 km northeast of Hualien County Hall, with a focal depth of 12.4 km.
