TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Over 4,000 households on Liuqiu Island lost power for an hour on Saturday (June 15) due to high load caused by a combination of hot weather and a high number of tourists.
Taipower said in a press release the load on Liunan line on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., measured 6,430 kW while Liubei was 6,045 kW, setting a record-breaking load of 12,475 kW, per CNA.
The entire island was plunged into darkness, forcing residents to use headlamps or phone flashlights to have dinner.
“It’s a big power outage,” a resident said in a video from Public Television Service (PTS). “We have to eat while wearing headlamps.”
To protect its power equipment, the automatic switch on the Liunan line tripped, the company reported. After confirming there were no other faults, power was fully restored once the switch was reset, per PTS.
Taipower said Liuqiu is currently undergoing an island-wide voltage upgrade project, which will increase supply capacity. The company plans to monitor electricity usage during the summer tourist season and adjust supply capabilities accordingly.
