TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Pingtung University (NPTU) in partnership with Compal Electronics unveiled its new quantum computing center on Tuesday (June 11).
According to the school’s press release on Tuesday, quantum computing is mainly concentrated in Canada and Japan. NPTU said its collaboration with Compal seeks to reduce Taiwan’s dependency on foreign technology, per CNA.
NPTU President Chen Yung-sen (陳永森) said the collaboration marks a significant step for domestic innovation in quantum annealing, an approach to using quantum physics that solves optimization problems. The president said he is confident the center will become a platform for academic exchanges and research.
“After AI technology, quantum computing technology will be the future,” Chen said.
Compal’s head of intelligent devices team Chen I-chin (陳怡欽) said the company is committed to promoting the development of GPU-accelerated quantum annealing technology. “The collaboration with NPTU represents an important milestone in achieving this goal,” he said.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Compal to advance domestic quantum computing technology,” College of Computer Science Dean Ou Chia-ho (歐家和) said. “This new quantum computing center will be an important platform for faculty and students to conduct quantum computing research, reduce research costs, and foster more innovative outcomes.”
