TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled east Taiwan at 5:51 a.m. on Wednesday (June 12), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 3 in Hualien County and a 2 in Nantou County, Taichung, Taitung County, Changhua County, and Yunlin County.
An intensity level of 1 was measured in Yilan County, Chiayi County, Taoyuan, Miaoli County, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu, Chiayi, New Taipei, and Tainan.
The CWA said its epicenter was 21.3 km south of Hualien County Hall, with a focal depth of 29.3 km.
Aftershocks have continued in Hualien since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the area on April 3.
