TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An outbreak of bongkrek acid poisoning centered on a Malaysian restaurant in Taipei in March has claimed its sixth victim, reports said Tuesday (June 11).
After receiving a liver transplant at the Taipei Municipal Wanfang Hospital on April 14, the patient, a woman aged 46, saw her condition improve, per UDN. However, on Monday (June 10), she suffered a pulmonary hemorrhage.
As a result, she was transferred to the intensive care unit and treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), but she still died Tuesday afternoon, the hospital said.
Most affected by the outbreak had eaten at the vegetarian Polam Kopitiam restaurant inside a shopping mall in the popular Xinyi District in late March.
According to official data, 18 other people who had been affected by bongkrek acid have been discharged from the hospital and were recuperating at home.
