TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Goose stepping will make its last appearance in a Taiwan Military Academy parade celebrating the school’s 100th anniversary next week.
As the official successor of the Whampoa Military Academy, the Taiwan Military Academy plans to hold a parade of 18 companies consisting of students from six military academies and three departments of the National Defense University, per CNA. The Military Academy band will lead the procession, followed by the school’s national banner team.
Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) announced last week that goose-stepping and bayonet training would be discontinued. The military should return to “combat training duties” and abandon “formalism,” Koo said. Future events will focus on quick marching.
More than 10,000 guests are expected to attend the event from June 15-16. The Whampoa Military Academy was originally established in Whampoa, China in 1924. It moved to Kaohsiung’s Fengshan District at the end of the Chinese Civil War and was officially renamed the Republic of China Military Academy. Former leader Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) served as its first principal.
