TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese archer Liu Tai-yen (劉泰言) hit the mark on Friday (June 7), taking home bronze in the men’s recurve at the Asia Cup Suwon, South Korea.
Although Liu lost the first set 25-27 against opponent Nakanishi Junya, he bounced back by scoring a perfect 30-27 in the second set, evening the score to 2-2. The third set ended in a 27-27 tie, adding one point to each archer’s score, per Liberty Times.
Liu then won the fourth and fifth sets at 28-27 and 28-25, earning an additional four points and securing bronze with a final score of 7-3. This victory follows the Taiwanese archery team’s bronze medal in the men’s recurve team event on Thursday (June 6).
Liu said he developed an interest in archery in the fifth grade. In 2019, he teamed up with Tai Yu-hsuan (戴宇軒) and Su Yu-yang (蘇于洋) to win a silver medal in the men’s team recurve event at the World Youth Archery Championships, per CNA.
While the younger archers compete in the Asia Cup, Taiwan’s Olympic archers, including Tang Chih-chun (湯智鈞) and Lin Tzu-hsiang (林子翔) are training intensively in Turkey. The veteran archers are preparing for the Paris Olympic archery qualification tournament starting on June 12.
The tournament will determine if Taiwan can secure the full quota of team entries for both men and women. Currently, Taiwan has earned one individual spot each for the men's and women's events, as well as one mixed team spot, CNA reported.
