TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The body of an Air Force soldier who drowned after a dare was found in Taipei on Friday (June 7).
On Tuesday evening (June 4), the 27-year-old Air Force soldier surnamed Chiang (江) was drinking with his cousin at Meiti Riverside Park in Taipei, per CNA. Chiang reportedly dared his cousin to swim with him across and back the Keelung River, but he went missing after reaching the middle of the river.
A search and rescue team found his body on Friday morning. Chiang's family identified him based on his clothing and physical features.
Police were notified at 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday that someone had gone missing after jumping into the water at Meiti Riverside Park in Taipei's Zhongshan District. First responders were dispatched to the scene to start a search.
Following an investigation, It was found that Chiang, who served in the Air Force Command Headquarters but was off-duty at the time, had been drinking with his cousin at the park.
Chiang's cousin, who was scrolling through his phone on the riverside, noticed that Chiang had reached the middle of the river but then lost sight of him due to the darkness and reported the incident. Firefighters searched within a 200-meter range upstream and downstream of Dazhi Bridge but found nothing as of Thursday (June 6).
At 9:05 a.m. Friday, firefighters continuing the search found a body 600 meters downstream of Dazhi Bridge. The body was brought to the shore, and the man was pronounced dead.
