TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Hundreds of supporters of the Bluebird Movement protest group took part in a rally in Times Square in New York on Tuesday (June 4) that included the posting of a billboard advertisement in the heart of the square.
In a press release, the "Overseas Bluebird Support Group" said 500 Taiwanese and international supporters gathered at Times Square to show their “unwavering commitment to Taiwan's democracy” and see the “Stand Strong with Taiwan” big-screen video. The group said this marked the first international support rally following the birth of the Bluebird Movement in Taiwan in May.
Last week, the Keep Taiwan Free organization, initiated by the Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York (TACGNY), raised NT$2.6 million (US$80,000) to display a Times Square billboard ad. On June 4, the group broadcasted a 30-second video advertisement every five minutes for 24 hours.

The rally attracted a diverse mix of attendees, with many holding placards in solidarity with Taiwan. Taiwanese rapper Dwagie (大支) made an appearance, along with supporters from the U.S., Ukraine, and the U.K.
Alex, a tech consultant from New York, was cited by the group as lauding Taiwan's leadership in democratic freedom and expressed concern over recent legislative developments that have prompted mass protests. Following the passage of controversial amendments by the legislature last month, Zack, a practicing lawyer in New York, said it was important to oppose legislative overreach to protect human rights and democracy in Taiwan.
Vicy, a local professional, said “The voices from Taiwan's Qingdao East Road should be heard globally, and the Times Square event aims to amplify those voices internationally.”
Taiwanese students in New York who came out to support the Bluebird Movement included those from Columbia University and New York University. Dr. Lin Yi-zheng, a doctoral researcher at Columbia University, said Taiwan's legislative irregularities and procedural injustices “spurred students to take a stand, hoping to broadcast the resolve to protect democracy worldwide.”
Robin, a representative from Philosophy Friday, praised the spontaneous gathering of hundreds of Taiwanese at Times Square, expressing his admiration for their creativity and “commitment to the true essence of democracy.”
According to the group, the Times Square rally is the first international support event following the founding of the Bluebird Movement last month, “showcasing the global Taiwanese community's determination to defend democracy.”

The organizers expressed hope this event will “further support Taiwan's democratic values worldwide.”
