TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A large landslide that blocked roads in Keelung on Monday (June 3) is expected to take over a week to clear.
The coastal road that passes by Keelung’s Chaojing Park is expected to be cleared of debris and open to traffic by June 11, the northern branch of the highway bureau said on Monday, per CNA. Owing to the large amount of rocks and dirt to be cleared, and the threat of further rockfalls, the highway bureau gave the date as a preliminary estimate.
The landslide fell on Provincial Highway No. 2 (台2線) between Keelung and Yilan. The highway bureau said that while the road is being cleared, Provincial Highway No. 62 (台62甲線) and No. 62’s A Line (台62甲線) can be used as alternatives.

Bus routes will also be altered to detour around the slip. Google Maps was yet to update the road conditions at the time of publishing.
The Hualien earthquake and subsequent aftershocks are thought to have loosened rocks on the hillside. Recent heavy rainfall is also believed to have contributed to the slip.
Maintenance crews estimated 22,000 cubic meters of rock and dirt fell in the landslide, affecting a 30 by 30 meter section of the hillside. Boulders weighing up to 80 tons are among the debris, which will need to be crushed before they can be removed from the road.
