TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Navy announced plans to conduct mine-laying exercises near Zhuwei Fishing Port in Taoyuan from July 1-26.
Navy units responsible for the defense of northern Taiwan will practice deploying training mines to counter enemy beach landings between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m. daily, CNA reported. The exercise will be monitored by unmanned aerial vehicles and is considered a "major annual exercise," indicating its connection to the upcoming Han Kuang drills.
Military sources noted that the nearby Zhuwei Beach has been designated a “red beach” by the military, meaning it is one of the few locations suitable for large-scale landing operations. Its proximity to critical infrastructure like Taoyuan International Airport makes it strategically significant.
The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology has developed four types of naval mines, known as Wan Hsiang mines. The Wan Xiang I series of mines includes conical and cylindrical variants, while the Wan Hsiang II series includes moored and bottom mines.
