TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Company unveiled an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) on Sunday (June 2).
The USV was revealed the same day Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) presided over a delivery and naming ceremony for a new Coast Guard vessel, Liberty Times reported. According to Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Company, the USV has a length of 16.5 meters, a width and height of 3.8 meters, and a full load displacement of only 20 tons.
It can reach a top speed of over 55 kilometers per hour and has a maximum range exceeding 556 kilometers.
The USV is capable of autonomous navigation. Even without GPS and communication equipment, it can return to base through its onboard computer. The platform can be customized to conduct mine sweeping, mine laying, and suicide attack missions.
The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology has also developed its own USVs and plans to begin production in 2026. The vessels come in two sizes, each with a different explosive load. They can be remote-controlled and will have their maximum range improved from 60 kilometers to 70 km.
