TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — At a memorial event in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei on Sunday (June 2), rain collecting in a tarp over the stage caused the structure to collapse.
The roof of the temporary stage on Ketagalan Boulevard collapsed around 11 a.m. on Sunday due to heavy rain and winds. Two band members playing on stage were injured, and one was rushed to the hospital, reported UDN.
Bystanders rushed to help band members knocked down by the tarp and frame. Footage of the incident shows that two bronze busts of Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) were also knocked over.
The event was held to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Whampoa Military Academy, an important institution in the history of Taiwan’s armed forces. It was attended by military veterans and several Kuomintang (KMT) officials including Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) and New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜).
